How to create a cosy outdoor entertainment space this winter

With the trend for socialising at home showing no sign of slowing any time soon, we’re all looking for ways to make our homes a welcoming place for visitors. And many people are making use of the extra space they have outside to wine and dine with friends and family. These outdoor social areas needn’t be restricted to the summer months either; there are plenty of things you can do to make your garden and patio comfortable during the winter too. Here are a few ideas of how you can create a cosy outdoor entertainment area this winter.

Let there be light

With short days and long nights, good lighting is essential to creating a welcoming outdoor space for entertaining friends and family. If you have an awning, an LED light bar is ideal for providing a warm glow over your patio, and the light can be dimmed or brightened according to the mood. If you want to add an extra bit of sparkle and perhaps some festive cheer, fairy lights and outdoor lanterns are a great addition too.

Sit comfortable

From sumptuous outdoor sofas and all-weather bean bags to smart dining tables and stylish chairs, there are plenty of outdoor furniture options to choose from. Whether you want to create an informal setting where friends and family can mingle and relax with a glass of mulled wine, or a more formal place for a special sit-down banquet, make sure you have plenty of comfortable seating for everyone.

Stay warm and cosy

Entertaining outdoors won’t be enjoyed by anyone if they don’t feel warm, so make sure you have a good heat source. Outdoor heaters are an energy-efficient way of providing instant and constant warmth at the touch of a button and can be fitted to the underside of your awning. Awning heaters are also inexpensive to run compared to oil or gas heaters. Provide lots of cosy cushions and soft blankets for your guests to wrap up in, and drape chairs and benches with faux fur throws for an extra cosy feel.

A private sanctuary

While retractable awnings are not designed to shelter you from the wind and rain, they still help to create a cosy and private outdoor space. If you use an outdoor heater and light bar, the heat and light will be better contained underneath the canopy both during the day and throughout the evening. You’ll also benefit from excellent privacy if your garden is overlooked.

Get back to nature

An outdoor entertaining space wouldn’t be complete without some beautiful plants and foliage. Pots of snowdrops and pretty cyclamen flowers are perfect for this time of year, and you can’t go wrong with some holly, mistletoe and ivy to bring in a touch of festiveness. Grow a good mix of evergreen bushes and trees and add pops of colour with colourful barks like the copper branches of the Tibetan Cherry.
