Big Outdoor Design Trends For 2022

We are now well and truly into 2022, and everyone is starting to think about sprucing up their outdoor spaces in preparation for Spring. Here we look at some of the biggest trends predicted for the year ahead. From taking the indoors outside and creating private spaces, to setting up outdoor offices, we expect to be spending lots of valuable time on our patios and in our gardens over the next twelve months.

Blending indoors and outdoors

While this isn’t a new trend, it’s not going away any time soon. According to Houzz, people want their outdoor spaces to “be relaxing extensions of their interior living spaces.” And Gardening etc suggests gardens are set become even more sociable, “your patio or courtyard is an extra room if you dress it up right.” Achieve this in your garden by adding outdoor sofas, rugs, chairs and tables. Dress the area with ambient fairy lights and stylish planters. And consider a patio awning to help blur the lines between your indoor and outdoor spaces: “investing in a stylish patio cover idea such as a pergola, awning or even a completely enclosed design, will maximise the potential of your plot,” says Gardening etc.

As we extend our living spaces outdoors, Houzz suggests that “many are hiring landscape pros on Houzz for screens, fences, plantings and other strategies that help create intimate spaces and separation from neighbours or block an undesirable view.” Retractable awnings also provide excellent screening for overlooked gardens. Plus, the addition of a drop-down valance such as that found on the 6000 Markilux Awning delivers even more privacy, and shade from low sunshine in the evening.

Garden Offices

With more people working from home than ever before, the popularity of garden offices has soared – by as much as 500%, according to The Guardian. However, not everyone has the space or the budget to build a weather-tight structure. BHG suggests that outdoor workspaces could also be an option: “creating a workspace on your patio, yard, or deck will allow you to take your laptop outdoors. You’ll look better on Zoom in natural light, and sunshine can be a powerful mood booster.” Awnings are a great way of creating a dedicated and comfortable outdoor office. Not only will you feel relaxed in the shaded space, but the canopy will also prevent sun glare from disturbing your productivity.
